Barber, Ball & Lightfoot

‘British Jazz Greats’
The Big Chris Barber Band
Kenny Ball & His Jazzmen
& Terry Lightfoot & His Jazzmen (with vocalist Melinda Lightfoot)

A rare opportunity to see three legends of British Jazz – Chris Barber, Kenny Ball and Terry Lightfoot – with their bands, together in one great concert.

The Big Chris Barber Band
Chris Barber celebrates his 61st year as a band leader in 2010. With his 11-piece band, featuring a 7-strong front line, Chris plays a selection of his favourite music: from his roots in New Orleans style in ‘Bourbon Street Parade’ (still his signature tune) to the early music of Duke Ellington and Sidney Bechet, Bob Crosby, blues by Sonny Terry & Brownie McGhee... and probably back to ‘When the Saints’!

The Big Chris Barber Band combine all these ingredients into an evening of exciting, and often moving, Jazz and Blues.

Kenny Ball & His Jazzmen

Probably the greatest test of an artist's success is his durability, and for more than 40 years Kenny Ball has flown the flag for his particular brand of traditional jazz all over the world. It is a tribute to his stamina and musical integrity that Kenny Ball and his Jazzmen are as popular today as they were back in 1960 when they had their first chart hit with ‘Samantha’.

Hit after hit came pouring out until the final tally was fourteen UK Top 30 records – a figure that eclipses even Kenny's idol, the great Louis Armstrong's total, and an achievement which has yet to be equaled by any other jazz artist.

Terry Lightfoot & His Jazzmen (with vocalist Melinda Lightfoot)
Terry was one of the leading figures in the traditional jazz revival in Britain in the 1950's, and subsequent "Trad" boom of the early 1960's. In 1965 Terry toured Britain with the great Louis Armstrong. He had previously met Louis in London in 1956, when he had the privilege of "jamming" with the man whose recordings first introduced him to jazz music as a teenager.

During the course of his career, he has also worked with many other jazz greats, including Yank Lawson, Vic Dickenson, Billy Butterfield and George Lewis, and his is the only British band to have toured with the legendary Edward "Kid" Ory Band, which included the wonderful trumpeter Henry "Red" Allen.

This is a unique evening of entertainment – not to be missed.
